10 Reasons to Choose Quality Early Learning and Child Care

Expert knowledge Early childhood educators are experts in child development and are trained to create inspiring learning environments!
Intentionality Early childhood educators provide your child the gift of time and attention. They will stop and explore the new flowers or jump in the mud puddles with your child.
Young at heart Early childhood educators know how to have fun! They’re not afraid to be silly and laugh with your child; all while nurturing your child’s creativity and helping to build their self-confidence.
Setting limits Every child needs reasonable boundaries, such as no playing ball inside. Early childhood educators set limits and support families in doing the same.
Love of literacy Early childhood educators read and tell stories, sing songs, and do puppet shows to inspire a love of language and to build early literacy skills.

Confidence boost Early childhood educators provide safe opportunities for your child to be independent and to become confident in their personality and decision making skills.
Inspired learning Early childhood educators ask open-ended questions to inspire creative thought and curiosity, to encourage children to explore, and to make learning fun.
Life skills Early childhood educators use their expertise to develop programs that use play as a tool for teaching math, literacy, science and essential life skills that last for life!
Making friends Early childhood educators are educated to appropriately support children to gain social skills, which are so important in making friends and developing positive relationships!
Helping hand Everyone gets stumped by parenting from time to time - juggling schedules, demands, and behaviours. When it gets tough and you need someone to talk to, reach out to your child’s early childhood educator!

Pre-conference Day for Team Leaders with GRIT Program

Registration for this event is now closed.

Pre-conference Day (Wednesday October 26th)

Who should attend this year's pre-conference day? Given the emphasis on exploring new professional practices, it is recommended that this pre-conference learning day is attended by any member of a professional team. Ideally, a director and/or a staff person in a supervisory position working directly with children would ensure this practical, co-learning experience is transferred back and applied to your professional practices as you return to work.

Social and Emotional Learning:  A Foundation for Responding to Challenging Behaviour
with GRIT Program
Wednesday October 26th
9:00 am - 3:30 pm
Nutrition break and lunch will be provided.

At a time when so much attention is placed on what the child is doing, what the child needs, and what the child or family ought to be doing, this full-day session will provide educators with an opportunity to reflect on their current practices and to build their skills, knowledge and confidence for responding to challenging behavior.

Drawing upon evidence based practices from the Teaching Pyramid Model, particular emphasis will be on the universal strategies to build a strong foundation for “all” children, the intentional use of targeted social and emotional strategies for “some” children, as well as the collaborative teaming with families and other community supports to understand our role in responding to behavior that we view as challenging.

Learning objectives for the day include:

  • Gain an understanding of the Teaching Pyramid Model framework and its influence in providing a social and emotional framework for early learning and care
  • Reflect on current practices for creating high quality interactions through the practice of relationship building (children, families and colleagues) and enriching learning environments needed to create a foundations for social and emotional development
  • Explore practices for the intentional teaching of social and emotional  skills for children including: peer interactions, identifying feelings, emotional regulation and problem solving with children
  • Identify steps needed for responding to challenging behavior and explore some tools for data collection (case study)
  • Create a leadership plan to ensure active engagement of families and how to sustain ongoing professional learning and investment in children’s social and emotional development

The ECDA Fall Conference will be held this year at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown on Thursday October 27th & Friday October 28th!  Once again we have confirmed some very exciting and talented speakers to join us over two days of learning, growing, and networking. The entire 2016 #ECDAfallconference will be focused on the topic of guidance.

Facilitator Biographies: Barb Reid (M.Ed.), Executive Director and Marilyn Armstrong (BHSA, ECD dip) ASaP Project Lead, have been leaders in the field of inclusive early learning and care throughout their careers.  In valuing life long learning, they stay abreast of current research and apply evidence-based practices in their work with children with developmental disabilities,  their families, and educators who strive for the best outcomes for all children.  Barb and Marilyn have been working at the GRIT Program (Getting Ready for Inclusion Today), in Edmonton Alberta, for close to 20 years.  Over this time, they have contributed to changes in the field of inclusive early learning and witnessed how inclusion, family entered practice, and quality early learning is created, experienced and practiced within their organization and region.
